Happening over the week of 27th July to 2nd August, The Festival of Code brings together young developers, all of them under the age of 18. During the week they attend centres around the country and build web and mobile applications that attempt to solve real world problems, with each project using at least one piece of open government data.

Then, over the weekend, up to 2000 young people will descend upon Birmingham to present their projects and get feedback on how to take them further.

Most of the developers participating in Young Rewired State have either taught themselves or learned coding skills outside the traditional school curriculum. For the young people who take part it is also a great chance to meet with like-minded developers.

Birmingham has hosted a number of successful centres for previous festivals and there will be at least three centres around the city this year. Building on the annual event there are also monthly coding clubs being held at Rebel Uncut’s offices on Ludgate Hill, just off St Paul’s Square and at the BBC in The Mailbox.

One of the reasons why the Festival of Code is such a success is that it attracts enthusiastic and knowledgeable mentors. YRS are recruiting mentors now and if you are interested then do register to find out more.?
